A new year, a new dig

The team are back to Bishop Middleham to continue investigating the wonderful Bishops Palace. A grand residence for an all-powerful Prince Bishop is sure to have a great story to tell, and after the 2019 excavations, we're all excited to see what comes next...

Goodbye for Now

The dig at East Park draws to a close. The team have found some remarkable features this year that are helping us piece together the puzzle of this Roman settlement. The finds, including some amazing vessels, will be sent for post-excavation analysis - let's see what comes next!

Back to East Park

The team is back for another season at East Park. This year the focus is on understanding the site on a larger scale. With six weeks and three trenches, the likelihood of finding some answers is bigger than ever.

Investigating Bishop Middleham

The second dig in the Brightwater series begins. The team is exploring the remains of Bishop Middleham Castle. After two and a half weeks of excavation, the ruins of the castle are been laid bare, and it’s easy to imagine just how glorious it would have looked in its heyday.

Excavations at East Park re-open!

The team has three weeks to find out as much as possible about the Roman town, the people who lived here, and what made it so different to others in the area.

Investigations continue...

Durham County Council Archaeology Section and Durham University jointly organised four summer seasons of excavation between 2005-2008 in a concerted effort to reveal new details about the settlement, but there are still lots of big questions waiting to be answered...
