The team is back for another season at East Park. This year the focus is on understanding the site on a larger scale. With six weeks and three trenches, the likelihood of finding some answers is bigger than ever.
The second dig in the Brightwater series begins. The team is exploring the remains of Bishop Middleham Castle. After two and a half weeks of excavation, the ruins of the castle are been laid bare, and it’s easy to imagine just how glorious it would have looked in its heyday.
The team has three weeks to find out as much as possible about the Roman town, the people who lived here, and what made it so different to others in the area.
Durham County Council Archaeology Section and Durham University jointly organised four summer seasons of excavation between 2005-2008 in a concerted effort to reveal new details about the settlement, but there are still lots of big questions waiting to be answered...
