We wish it could always be that sunny and blue! But today we had an inevitable rainy day – we had to stay out of the trenches as trampling about in the muddy conditions could have damaged the cremated bone and other finds we came down onto yesterday.

So instead, the super Venturers who came to brave the rain worked their way through our first lot of finds washing. They used toothbrushes, tooth picks and warm water to clean the mud off of slingshots, whetstones, little flint fragments and hammerstones. They also counted up how many finds we had from this first ‘context’ – or archaeological layer / deposit. By cleaning the finds it allows our experts to be able to identify them a lot easier so they can help us understand the archaeological activity on our site. It also helps them spot worked or damaged surfaces, such as on the whetstones and hammerstones, so that we know that those items have been used by people in the past.

We are hoping for better conditions tomorrow – those finds are just waiting to be discovered!
