Iron Age pottery

We saw some Roman pottery the other day, but here’s Indie with something a bit earlier! This was found in association with our Iron Age roundhouses.

As well as pottery, we’ve found a large number of Iron Age storage pits at Wittenham Clumps. Literally pits, these were dug into the ground within settlements, and sometimes within the boundaries of the roundhouses themselves.

In wider contexts, these have been interpreted as food storage pits: think of it as the ancient refrigerator!

Here’s Ben showing of some lovely Roman pottery fresh from the trench. This would have been a pretty big vessel when it was intact!

We’ve found loads of great examples of pottery this year! This is pretty common for a Roman villa site. What kind of pottery do you reckon we have here?
