Diary – Flag Fen https://projects.digventures.com/flag-fen Volunteer Digging with an Archaeology Field School Mon, 07 Dec 2020 15:53:55 +0000 en-GB hourly 1 Day 21 – Farewell, Flag Fen https://projects.digventures.com/flag-fen/timeline/diary/day-21-farewell-flag-fen/ Sun, 12 Aug 2012 12:58:29 +0000 https://projects.digventures.com/flag-fen/?post_type=timeline&p=3815 Rounding off the final day of our three week excavation, its tools down… and glasses up!

Archaeology in your hands’ is our moto – and without your helping hands, either in the trenches or watching from afar – this project would never have happened.

This has been, without doubt, the most exhilarating three weeks of our lives, and from all the team here we wish you all our deepest heartfelt thanks.

As the sun sets slowly in the west, we bid you a fine farewell.

Now, did someone mention an End of Site Party…

Day 20 – Christmas comes early! https://projects.digventures.com/flag-fen/timeline/diary/day-20-the-ark-system/ Sat, 11 Aug 2012 12:37:04 +0000 https://projects.digventures.com/flag-fen/?post_type=timeline&p=3813 It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…

We FINALLY get our Field School Venturer Louise (three weeks!) to do a bit on camera! There’s also a lil’ something special about how our online interface works for recording, and how awesome SIS Live is for hooking us up to the internet. And, we have our MOST SPECIAL visitor yet on site…

Day 19 – Hot Cupboard of Love https://projects.digventures.com/flag-fen/timeline/diary/day-19-hot-cupboard-of-love/ Fri, 10 Aug 2012 12:32:33 +0000 https://projects.digventures.com/flag-fen/?post_type=timeline&p=3811 Goodbye to the Hot Cupboard of Love…

It’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for: a whole day where we can wander around saying ‘…and we’ve only got three days!’

We’re in the final push of the dig and the trenches are on fire! We have a special lecture from Tony Robinson, and it’s the last day with our beloved sandwich van – so we all get a bit excited!

Day 18 – Molten Metal https://projects.digventures.com/flag-fen/timeline/diary/day-18-molten-metal/ Thu, 09 Aug 2012 11:52:42 +0000 https://projects.digventures.com/flag-fen/?post_type=timeline&p=3809 Signing off our first trench, and some molten metal…

Ben and Kristina from Birmingham come back for a visit, because they missed us and, let’s face it – someone had to beast through the last bit on Test Pit 1.

Thanks to them, it’s our first trench signed off! Experimental archaeology comes to Flag Fen with a special visit from Neil Burridge, demonstrating the magic of Bronze casting, and how easy it is (!!) to make some lovely rings.

Day 17 – DVIPs https://projects.digventures.com/flag-fen/timeline/diary/day-17-dvips/ Wed, 08 Aug 2012 11:47:25 +0000 https://projects.digventures.com/flag-fen/?post_type=timeline&p=3807 Lets hear it for low energy mornings…

What are the connections between Flag Fen and ‘Europe’s Lost World?’

We found out when Vice Gaffney paid us a visit as part of our DVIP lecture programme – and the results were awe inspiring! We’ve filmed all of these lectures, and will be releasing these over the coming year – so watch this space!

Today we catch up with Mr Wet Wood (Ian Panter), find butchery marks on our animal bones, and finally get to the bottom of the Digging Bag enigma… or do we?

It was another action-packed day here at Flaggers!

We’ve got plenty on offer including a round-up on the test pits, feedback on finds from a pottery specialist and a zooarchaeologist, and a visit from GoPro specialist Johnny Cucumbers to introduce the ultimate in cool: CamCam. Don’t miss!

Day 13 & 14 – Geophysics https://projects.digventures.com/flag-fen/timeline/diary/day-13-14-geophysics/ Sun, 05 Aug 2012 11:37:46 +0000 https://projects.digventures.com/flag-fen/?post_type=timeline&p=3803 Another special weekend down on the Fen.

A DVIP lecture from Francis Pryor, Geophysics masterclass from John Gater, and a post-pub quiz party in the Wattle and Daub. Oh yes – the archaeology wasn’t too bad either!

Day 12 – It’s a dig bag, damn it! https://projects.digventures.com/flag-fen/timeline/diary/day-12-its-a-dig-bag-damn-it/ Fri, 03 Aug 2012 11:33:45 +0000 https://projects.digventures.com/flag-fen/?post_type=timeline&p=3801 Featuring a special guest appearance from Mr Wet Wood…

A Muppet moment, a game of two halves, and ‘constructive’ disagreement over the interpretation at Trench 1. It’s a digging bag damn it!

Coming to end of week two, and the final furlong is looming…

Day 11 – Wood Recording https://projects.digventures.com/flag-fen/timeline/diary/day-11-wood-recording/ Thu, 02 Aug 2012 11:28:43 +0000 https://projects.digventures.com/flag-fen/?post_type=timeline&p=3799 It sometimes feels like there’s a natural rhythm to fieldwork…

with spirited digging days (when all that can be heard is the scrape of WHS trowels) followed quick sharp by the intense concentration of planning, recording and lifting waterlogged wood.

Today’s film has the feel of one of those days. Starting with one of our early morning team huddles in which we discuss and decide the day’s strategy, followed immediately after by team introductions to the day’s new diggers, and a presentation of the previous day’s finds. Mike takes us on trip through the science of meticulous wood recording, Test Pit 1 gets ever deeper, and Fergus gets confused with the site animal bone specialist. An easy mistake to make…
