Archaeology in your hands’ is our moto – and without your helping hands, either in the trenches or watching from afar – this project would never have happened.

This has been, without doubt, the most exhilarating three weeks of our lives, and from all the team here we wish you all our deepest heartfelt thanks.

As the sun sets slowly in the west, we bid you a fine farewell.

We FINALLY get our Field School Venturer Louise (three weeks!) to do a bit on camera! There’s also a lil’ something special about how our online interface works for recording, and how awesome SIS Live is for hooking us up to the internet. And, we have our MOST SPECIAL visitor yet on site…

It’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for: a whole day where we can wander around saying ‘…and we’ve only got three days!’

We’re in the final push of the dig and the trenches are on fire! We have a special lecture from Tony Robinson, and it’s the last day with our beloved sandwich van – so we all get a bit excited!

Ben and Kristina from Birmingham come back for a visit, because they missed us and, let’s face it – someone had to beast through the last bit on Test Pit 1.

Thanks to them, it’s our first trench signed off! Experimental archaeology comes to Flag Fen with a special visit from Neil Burridge, demonstrating the magic of Bronze casting, and how easy it is (!!) to make some lovely rings.

We found out when Vice Gaffney paid us a visit as part of our DVIP lecture programme – and the results were awe inspiring! We’ve filmed all of these lectures, and will be releasing these over the coming year – so watch this space!

Coming to end of week two, and the final furlong is looming…

with spirited digging days (when all that can be heard is the scrape of WHS trowels) followed quick sharp by the intense concentration of planning, recording and lifting waterlogged wood.

Today’s film has the feel of one of those days. Starting with one of our early morning team huddles in which we discuss and decide the day’s strategy, followed immediately after by team introductions to the day’s new diggers, and a presentation of the previous day’s finds. Mike takes us on trip through the science of meticulous wood recording, Test Pit 1 gets ever deeper, and Fergus gets confused with the site animal bone specialist. An easy mistake to make…
