DigVentures is proud to be leading the archaeological excavation of Jane Pit, Frostoms Cottages and Holyoak Farm on behalf of Workington Town Council and the Helena Thompson Museum, as a first step in their project to preserve the important heritage of Jane Pit for future generations.

Our aim is to work with people from the area to recover as many clues as we can about the lives of the miners who lived near Jane Pit, as well as the workings of the pit that still lie below the ground.

The excavation is a part of a much bigger project to preserve and refurbish the remains of Jane Pit and to raise awareness of the importance of the site amongst the local community. Workington Town Council, the Helena Thompson Museum and Allerdale Council have come together to make this project happen.

Any artefacts recovered will be cared for by the Helena Thompson Museum, which specialises in Workington’s history. Members of the local community and visitors from further afield can join us during the excavations, and there will be an educational programme for schools and clubs running alongside the investigation.

We will also be working with the museum to provide additional activities for people to get involved.
