Join the Project Team to hear about our exciting plans for the Jane Pit excavations, including why we are digging –
and what we hope to find. Manda Forster and Chris Casswell from DigVentures will be talking about the dig, with Chris
Bagshaw from Workington Town Council joining us to talk about the wider aims of the Jane Pit Project.

Our team of volunteers is set to get started looking for evidence of how the mine worked and what life was like for the families who lived nearby.
Places on the dig are fully booked, but you can still sign up to the waiting list, and register your interest in any future events here.

Special Event: Dr Mike Nevell, Chairman of The Association for Industrial Archaeology

Join us for a fantastic opportunity to hear one of the UK’s foremost experts on Industrial Archaeology, Dr Mike Nevell,
Head of Archaeology from the University of Salford and Chairman of The Association for Industrial Archaeology), talk
about some his exciting research on sites similar to Jane Pit:
“Excavating the Iconic: exploring the 18th century colliery pumping engines at Reelfitz Pit and Fairbottom Bobs”
The excavation of 18th century colliery pumping engines is rare – finding parts of those engines on site is even rarer.
This talk will look at two important North West England sites where excavation has revealed important information
about the development of this type of stationary steam engine: Fairbottom Bobs in Ashton-under-Lyne and Reelfitz Pit
near Workington”.
This event will also have an update from the Project Team, including some of the artefacts recovered from the dig.
