Day five started off wet and grey, but the day began brightening up with the arrival of three VIP visitors: the competition winners from the Young Archaeologists’ Club (YAC).

Lorna, Sam and Rosie’s prize was to join us at Leiston Abbey for a day and take part in the dig. Starting with a lesson in trench etiquette from Raksha, Lorna, Sam and Rosie were soon digging in Trench 11.

Don’t count the bugs, count your finds!

Battling through a bug infestation and hot, sunny working conditions, Lorna’s mantra, “Don’t count the bugs, count your finds!” kept everyone going as discoveries of daub, bone and ceramic building material were made. Next up was finds washing and sorting with DigVentures’ finds supervisor, Mandy Holloway. The young archaeologists did an excellent job, washing bone, ceramic tiles and sorting the special finds.

The final activity of the day was wet sieving. Nat got everyone into aprons and long gloves before the team started sieving bulk samples from Trench 10. After lots of splashing, sieving and sorting, our young Venturers were even able to record the samples on the new Digital Dig Team record! Lorna, Sam and Rosie did an amazing job, and you can see highlights of their day on our Day 5 video. Thank you for joining us guys! LA6_0284
