Today the team have been backfilling the trenches and packing everything away. We’re not ready to say goodbye yet, but knowing we’ll come back next year makes us feel better about leaving this beautiful island.

Yesterday, we had a touching ceremony to reinter some of the human remains that had been lifted this year. Thank you to everyone who attended and joined us in paying our respects to Lindisfarne’s previous residents.

And, finally, a huge thank you to everyone who has crowdfunded our dig this year, both digital crowdfunders and our Venturers! Without you all this wouldn’t be possible.

Back again with some more recording! Meanwhile the finds room is also very busy, making sure everything is clean and ready to be transported to the specialists. Busy day at Lindisfarne HQ!!

Guess what these guys are doing? You got it! Evie and Azra are also trying their hand at recording! They’re working in the area near the shrine burial.

Cathy, Ben and Harriet are working hard to record the features in their trench as we head towards the finish line! With the trenches closing tomorrow, it’s super important to make sure we have a record of everything for when we begin working on our interpretations.

Cathy has cleaned up the bone comb, and it’s confirmed something we suspected… we have runes! Carved into the bone is a series on runes that we’re working on deciphering. “Hands of my comb”? Someone’s name? Only time will tell…

The finds room team have been busy cleaning some of the human remains lifted from the trenches, when they came across this. This individual seems to have been suffering from osteomyelitis. This is when an infection develops within the bone, you can see the holes that have formed as a result. This person would have been in a lot of pain!

Cathy’s found an AMAZING artefact in her feature: a fragment of a bone comb. It looks very promising, she’ll head to the finds room and clean it up so we can see it in a bit more detail!

Emma and Issy are working hard to continue the investigation of the chest burial . The chest plate / lock was lifted yesterday, and now today it’s time for the remains to be lifted. Excitingly, we think there might be another burial in there! Only time will tell the exact relationship between the individuals in this area.
