3D Models – Lindisfarne https://projects.digventures.com/lindisfarne Volunteer Digging with an Archaeology Field School Thu, 04 Aug 2022 16:03:17 +0000 en-GB hourly 1 20/09/13 – the furnace area in 3D https://projects.digventures.com/lindisfarne/timeline/models/20-09-13-the-furnace-area-in-3d/ Sun, 13 Sep 2020 12:00:10 +0000 https://projects.digventures.com/lindisfarne/?post_type=timeline&p=5585 The furnace area… in 3D!

Our main goal this season is to understand the furnace area, and we’re making great progress already. We can already see that it’s much larger than initially thought, with more pits and spreads of metalworking dotted around.

But things are starting to get really interesting: on one side of the big circular feature, there’s a squareish stone stucture, with a skeleton inside. We’re currently trying to figure out if it’s a flue or stokehole into which a burial has later been placed, or whether it’s a very substantial stone-lined grave that has been dug into the furnace decades or centuries after it went out of use.

Content warning: This model is of human remains

This individual seems to have been laid to rest with their legs straight, but their upper body twisted to the side. We don’t know if the position was intentional or accidental… Anglo-Saxons buried their dead in a variety of positions, but for the early Christians, prone (straight, rather than flexed) was the most common.

After careful excavation, we can finally see exactly how the individual was buried: probably wrapped in a shroud, facing east, and with hands clasped over the pelvis. See more.

3D Model – Trench 2 West – Mid Ex https://projects.digventures.com/lindisfarne/timeline/models/3d-model-trench-2-west-mid-ex/ Thu, 27 Jul 2017 16:00:35 +0000 https://projects.digventures.com/lindisfarne/?post_type=timeline&p=4781 This is the area where we found the charnel pit. It has now been excavated, but in the top right corner there’s a new feature starting to emerge, and it looks like the corner of an Anglo-Saxon building! It’s made of big stone slabs and a concrete-like material. It’s certainly impressive in size, but since we’ve only just caught the corner of it, we’ll have to come back next year to extend the trench and find out what it actually is.
