Trench 16 is having its measurements taken. Ken and Mima are producing the Plan Drawing: a birds-eye-view of the trench.

Meanwhile, Barney and Dave are producing the Section Drawing: a face-on drawing of the layers we’ve dug gown through.

And at the bottom of the rampart, Mary is double-boarding it like a boss.

In Pictures: An Archaeological Biopsy At Oldbury Camp!

If geophysics is like an x-ray, then here’s why digging test pits is the archaeological equivalent of a biopsy. Out in the West Country, right on the banks of the River Severn, lies Oldbury…

Trench 15 on the outer rampart is clearly where all the luck is today – it’s buzzing with discovery! Just a few minutes after Paul unearthed some animal bone, Barry has popped out a very distinctive piece of pottery – it’s black one side and white on the other. We don’t know how old it is yet, but we’ll update the official Digital Dig Team record as soon as we do.

19th June - 2nd July 2017

Oldbury Camp Excavation!

We've got two weeks to find out exactly what happened at Oldbury Camp. How old is it? Do any Iron Age remains survive? And what exactly happened here in the past?

5th - 7th November 2016

Dirty Weekend at Oldbury Camp

It's time for Oldbury Camp's first archaeological biopsy! 30 archaeology-lovers helped us dig 10 test pits in one weekend, to establish what survives and where, ahead of a two week excavation in 2017!

Test Pit 19 is now ready for you to see online! Located just outside the hillfort’s perimeter, you can see part of a cobbled yard or road at the bottom. In the layers immediately above it, the Venturers found all manner of artefacts, including a 17th century pipe stamped with the initials of Philip Edwards, from Bristol.

Our first 3D model of Trench 15 is now ready for you to explore. There isn’t much in here yet, but hopefully we’ll have changed that by the end of the week. Mary took the photos, proving there’s way more to being a Venturer than just digging!

Here’s what Janet found at the hillfort… It’s black, it’s burnished and it’s probably Romano-British! #gurtlush #DirtyWeekenders #TheToot pic.twitter.com/XbAmXi9lxB
