Finds – Oldbury Camp https://projects.digventures.com/oldbury-camp Volunteer Digging with an Archaeology Field School Mon, 14 May 2018 10:53:35 +0000 en-GB hourly 1 Day 7 – Surprise Pottery https://projects.digventures.com/oldbury-camp/timeline/finds/day-7-surprise-pottery/ Sun, 25 Jun 2017 11:45:54 +0000 https://projects.digventures.com/oldbury-camp/?post_type=timeline&p=3604 Trench 15 on the outer rampart is clearly where all the luck is today – it’s buzzing with discovery! Just a few minutes after Paul unearthed some animal bone, Barry has popped out a very distinctive piece of pottery – it’s black one side and white on the other. We don’t know how old it is yet, but we’ll update the official Digital Dig Team record as soon as we do.

Day 8 – Trench 19 https://projects.digventures.com/oldbury-camp/timeline/finds/day-8-trench-19/ Sat, 24 Jun 2017 18:00:48 +0000 https://projects.digventures.com/oldbury-camp/?post_type=timeline&p=3648 Test Pit 19 is now ready for you to see online! Located just outside the hillfort’s perimeter, you can see part of a cobbled yard or road at the bottom. In the layers immediately above it, the Venturers found all manner of artefacts, including a 17th century pipe stamped with the initials of Philip Edwards, from Bristol.

3D Model – Trench 15 https://projects.digventures.com/oldbury-camp/timeline/finds/3d-model-trench-15/ Fri, 23 Jun 2017 17:00:55 +0000 https://projects.digventures.com/oldbury-camp/?post_type=timeline&p=3624 Our first 3D model of Trench 15 is now ready for you to explore. There isn’t much in here yet, but hopefully we’ll have changed that by the end of the week. Mary took the photos, proving there’s way more to being a Venturer than just digging!

Day 4 – Mary Jane’s got pottery! https://projects.digventures.com/oldbury-camp/timeline/finds/day-4-mary-janes-got-pottery/ Thu, 22 Jun 2017 16:16:25 +0000 https://projects.digventures.com/oldbury-camp/?post_type=timeline&p=3551 It looks like Mary Jane might have found something at the bottom of the rampart trench…

Hooray! It’s a piece of glazed pottery. It’s not clear what period it’s from, but likely medieval or post-medieval given the colour of the glaze. Since we’re only in the most modern deposit, that’s not a bad start. If we keep digging, hopefully it won’t be long until we find something from the Iron Age!

Trench Model – Trench 16 Pre-Ex https://projects.digventures.com/oldbury-camp/timeline/finds/trench-model-trench-16-pre-ex/ Wed, 21 Jun 2017 13:15:21 +0000 https://projects.digventures.com/oldbury-camp/?post_type=timeline&p=3555 Blimey, that was quick – the Venturers have already made a 3d Model of Trench 16 (aka the rampart slide!) for you to explore. Mary took the pictures, and then with Chris’ computering skills, the model was ready by lunchtime!

3D Model – Trench 17 https://projects.digventures.com/oldbury-camp/timeline/finds/3d-model-trench-17/ Wed, 21 Jun 2017 13:00:51 +0000 https://projects.digventures.com/oldbury-camp/?post_type=timeline&p=3626 Trench 17 looks super clean and smooth right now – much like archaeologists do before they start digging. We won’t say anything about how we (or the trench) will look by the end of the dig.
