This year’s dig has taught us so much that we’re already planningto return for another round of excavation in 2022. Thanks to everyone who crowdfunded this dig! Our understanding of the site has changed dramatically in this short time, and you can now follow Ginny on a mini tour of the excavation to see what we’ve learned, and uncovered, with your support over the last two weeks.

The digger is here and the trenches are being closed up! What a dig it’s been this year, full of lots of surprises. We’re super happy with what we’ve uncovered so far, and we can’t wait to see what else will show up as we move forward.

Yesterday we hosted our Halloween Special on Zoom, and learnt all about some spooky Tudor ghost stories!

Last on the list, the team are quantifying and bagging all the finds we’ve uncovered on site. The larger stones from Winchcombe Abbey will stay at the castle, but we’ll be sending away everything else to specialists for further analysis. For now, we’ll make sure we have a full count of everything we’ve found from every context for the records.

After yesterday, we just have a few things to finish up in the trenches today before we say goodbye! The team will wrap up a few bits of recording, including plans and drawings.

In the meantime, the trench has been cleaned up nicely (in between rain showers) ready to be turned into a nice photogrammetry model. Ben will take a series of photos from several angles, all across the trench, that can be stitched together and turned into a model for you to view from home!

We have a queen with us in the trenches today! After our spooky Halloween Special yesterday, ‘Catherine Parr’ has decided to join us for our last day.

With her help we’ll get these trenches cleaned up in no time. Happy Halloween! 🎃

Recording fever has spread to the main trench, where the rest of the team are busy collecting photos of all the important features and sections. With the weather tomorrow looking very rainy, we’re taking advantage of the dry as much as possible.

But, it’s not easy. The archaeologists’ worst enemy has arrived: the sun. The sunshine is creating harsh shadows that make our photos less clear, so the team have equipped themselves with a trusty blanket and started to create some artificial shade. Can you spot them?
