This Roman coin features the head of Maximinus (AD235-238). The first Barbarian to ascend the throne, he was proclaimed Emperor by his own troops, and killed by them 3 years later.
This fascinating little potsherd bears the name of it’s Roman owner ‘Annamus’. It’s the first recorded instance of this name in Britain, and he probably came from the imperial mining district of Noricum in what is now Austria and Slovenia.
